In my project, I study the interactions between two mesocarnivores, the golden jackal (Canis aureus) and the red fox (Vulpes vulpes), and larger carnivores, such as the grey wolf (Canis lupus), the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx), and the brown bear (Ursus arctos), in two distinct regions of Croatia using camera-trap data. This research is conducted in collaboration with Prof. Josip Kusak from the University of Zagreb, who provided the data. To investigate which factors may influence the time until a mesocarnivore is detected following the detection of another carnivore, I use a Time-to-Event (TTE) approach fitted with an extended Cox proportional hazards model. To assess the direction and magnitude of potential interactions, I generate randomized scenarios using pseudo-dominant species events and compare the resulting patterns with those observed in the original data. The study aims to determine whether mesocarnivores exhibit temporal attraction, avoidance, or neutral responses to other carnivore species.
